GCB – Too Texan to survive???

Click for GCB - First Look

Click for GCB - First Look

While the show is full of Texan stereotypes – Beautiful women with big hair, short skirts and snooty attitudes, I still feel it has the potential to be a fun show. The show is all about style, fashion, beauty and being gossipy- something most women enjoy.

We all know that Desperate Housewives is ending really soon, it was a smart move to start GCB sooner and feature it right after DH as it has the same target audience. This is bound to give the show a good boost to hit the ground running. The challenge though is the unavoidable comparisons to DH. And the truth is that Wisteria Lane housewives are a sure shot winner over the Good Christian Texan Bitches or Belles is it??

But the question is – Does the show has the staying power? I’m not sure -  we’ll have to wait and watch. All I can suggest for now is – pour a glass of wine and enjoy the show… It sure is a great way to end the weekend.

Facebook or Twitter – What’s better for your brand?

I had a healthy discussion with my friends the other day about what’s better for business – Facebook or Twitter. I think there is no clear-cut answer to the question: “Which is better for brands — Facebook or Twitter? It just depends on what you want to achieve from your campaign and put more emphasis on that using these two amazing platforms.  Let’s take a look at some of the strengths of Twitter and Facebook. Let’s start with Twitter:

  • Connect with influential people: With twitter, it’s very easy to follow and connect to the thoughts of industry leaders. A statement about a product coming from an influential leader make a much bigger impact as compared to if it’s coming from a friend or the business itself.
  • Following interests. Twitter is definitely my preferred platform for finding and following interesting people and issues. I’m much more likely to follow someone I don’t personally know on Twitter as compared to Facebook.
  • Goes Viral Faster: Going viral is much faster on Twitter because you can engage in dialog with the right people. Since most of the data that gets Tweeted is public, there’s a huge opportunity for viral marketing campaigns- in which customers become promoters of the products, bringing them closer to the company.
  • Good for SEO: Because Google has incorporated Twitter, using Twitter properly can help big time with a company’s SEO.

Facebook: My thought on Facebook is that it best for personal connections and corporate brands and less so for connecting with people (who are influential like celebrities) you don’t know personally.

  • Huge customer base: Many people joined Facebook simply because so many other people and businesses they know were there. It’s hard to argue with 1 billion users. And they are not just numbers, these people tend to spend significant amount of time on Facebook.
  • Personal relationships: As I mentioned earlier, Facebook is best for keeping up with family, friends and acquaintances and is less for learning about other brands or unknown people.
  • Brand promotion. When users “like” a company’s Facebook page, they are doing it more for themselves and not necessarily for advertising it to their friends.

A lot of businesses have benefited a lot through Twitter as well as Facebook and it’s best to include both Facebook and Twitter along with other Social Media campaigns in their Marketing strategy.

Starbucks goes blonde

Starbucks Blonde Roast coffee supports Starbucks growth strategy to innovate with new products, enter new categories, and expand into new channels of distribution.

Click to watch the Starbucks Blonde Roast commercial

Starbucks has done a great job with the Blonde. It has recognized an opportunity to attract new customers as well as meet needs of existing customers looking for a lighter roast coffee. It is strategized to compete with other “less intense” offerings from competitors like McDonald’s and Dunkin Donuts. It may take a little while to catch on. But once it does, I have a feeling this blonde is here to stay.

JC Penney in Oscars – A Fair and Square winner

Besides Angelina Jolie’s striking leg pose and Meryl Streep’s winner winning speech, another brand that won fair and square at the Oscars was JC Penney. The JC Penney advertisements gelled very well with Oscar night highlighting the Hollywood theme with the whole movie watching experience. They were the prime sponsors for the evening and took the full advantage by owning the whole evening. They were very consistent in their advertising by fully focusing on their new business model – “Everyday Low Prices”

The “Fair and Square” campaign featuring Ellen DeGeneres with their brand new logo hits right on target encouraging shoppers to reject frustrating sales and couponing experiences. The campaign is brilliantly crafted and is very easy to understand.  I also love their new logo.

JC Penney’s whole new brand strategy is a bold move that the brand is taking very seriously and is implementing it extremely aggressively.  Let’s just say if it can couple the actual consumer experience with it’s branding strategy – it’s a Fair and Square winner.

Desperate Housewives… what we learnt & why it’s hard to say goodbye?

The desperate housewives of Wisteria Lane, Fairview have visited our homes since 2004. They made us laugh at their crazy goof-ups, cry when they were unhappy, and root for them when they survived a crisis. In one way or other, most of us have identified with their hopes, dreams, and unconventional behaviors.

Apart from giving us some great laughs also teaches us some important lessons in life that: Friends are forever: The value of friendship is perhaps the most important lesson desperate housewives have taught us. Whether it’s burying secrets or burying a body, our girlfriends will always be with us and support us. No matter what, girlfriends are for life and we should always cherish their friendship.

Love your family: In between all the sentimental moments and roller- coaster lives of our accident-prone ladies, they constantly remind us that our family comes first. Always. They will go any lengths to cover-up for their loved ones and protect their families.

Fake it till you make it: The ladies constantly remind us that everything will be fine in the end but until it does, act it out. If you are not having a good day, Fake it. If you are not able to make the best meal, Fake it… and you are not satisfied or happy.. you get the idea. And eventually, everything will fall in place and if it doesn’t, it’s not the end.

Be aware of your enemies: The housewives make sure we remember one essential rule: know your enemies, and then know how to crush them…or have some wine and blow it off.

Laughter is the best medicine: The show regularly remind us that even the most ridiculous moments can come with a giggle or two. You can overcome any situation with courage and laughter.

It’s a great show, which I’ve been following for eight seasons additively. But as they say all good things come to an end. With only a few episodes left, I am sad to say goodbye to our friends at Wisteria Lane. You can raise a toast to these wonderful women and enjoy the series finale with your girls and some fine wine. I know, I will!!!

Don’t ask me why I am a Vegetarian… Ask yourself why you are not…

I am proud to say that I am a vegetarian. It’s GOOD: GOOD for health, GOOD for animals, GOOD for the environment, and GOOD for other people.

Why go veggie?

  • Killing animals is morally/ spiritually wrong-  I personally believe that it is wrong even in principle to kill animals for food when it is not necessary for our survival. I want to respect the life of animals by not killing them for food. What if someone kills your pet you love and nurture just for pleasure? When you see dead animals on the side of the road, are you tempted to stop for a snack? Does the sight of a dead bird make you salivate? I am sure the answer to these questions is NO. Then why torture and kill the poor animals to eat them.
  • Health reasons: People just don’t need to eat meat to live healthy lives. It’s no secret that compared to average meat-eaters vegetarians generally live longer, are less likely to be overweight, suffer far fewer incidences of cancer and heart disease, and have more energy. I’ve gone years without it, and have not withered away.
  • Concern for the environment: Did you know that raising cows, pigs, and chicken uses far more water, and causes far more pollution, than raising fruits, grains, and vegetables? If you’re concerned about the environment, then research just how much pollution (ground water and air pollution) is caused annually by just one feedlot. You’ll be shocked. I was!
  • Religion: A lot of religions mainly Hinduism preaches vegetarianism. Being a Hindu, I was a born vegetarian but as soon as I realized the cruelty of the meat industry and factory farming, I was so thankful that my religion taught me to be a veggie

Some common arguments people give to justify non-vegetarianism

  • I didn’t kill the animal – No, but you hired the killer. If you purchase meat, it means that the killing was done for you and you paid for it.
  • Plants also have life so why do you eat them? – Yes, plants have life but they are not capable of feeling pain or suffering. Plants do not have anything similar to a nervous system, nor do they exhibit any behavior to indicate that they possess consciousness or desire to live. Animals on the other hand are capable to have a feeling of happiness, joy, sorrow and a most importantly, a desire to live.
  • Animals kills and eats other animals – There is a big distinction between the situation when a lion kills to eat meat as opposed to when a human kills to eat meat.  Whereas animals eat meat to survive, humans eat meat simply for the pleasure of tasting meat.

Killing is one of the ultimate forms of harm and since I believe that harming others (even non-humans) for any reason is wrong. That’s why I don’t eat meat.  I do not eat meat and I do believe that in our society where plenty of alternatives are readily available, anyone else should either.

Great wine and great friends… Life is good…

Wine has a very distinctive taste that most people either love or hate.  Those who love the taste and would prefer to have wine to anything else when offered a cocktail. And trust me, it is bound to happen after you have it a few times. You’ll love to have it for special occasions or with a nice dinner or a quiet night at home relaxing or enjoying it over a gossip session with your bffs (that’s my favorite)

What’s not to love about wine:

  • It’s delicious -  There are plenty of different blends and brands of wine to choose from that you are sure to find one that fits your taste buds perfectly. Also, there are enough varieties to go with any kind of cuisine.
  • Get you high, just the right amount to get you in the perfect mood.
  • You can even cook with it… Sometimes, you can even put it in it:)
  • And, even doctors recommend it :)

The perfect wine: Finding a great wine is not hard.  You can go through the winery or local liquor store and see what different selections they have.  You will find that there are different varieties, brands, names, ages and colors of wine in all kinds of price range to choose from.  It’s for you to decide on the flavor and texture of wine (whether you want regular, dry or extra dry) works for you. There are good wines in all price ranges and you can spend as much you want depending on the occasion. My favorite spot to buy wines is Trader Joe’s where you get wines for all occasions at very reasonable prices.

To sum it up, Going through and tasting each wine is fun to discover different flavors and figure how every wine is different.  Wine is something that also goes with everything.  You can have it with dinner, a special dessert or all by itself. You can also drink wine alone, with a special someone or a group of friends.  Either way, you can chillax and enjoy great comforts of life with a great glass of your favorite wine…. and life will at-least seem to be good…. Cheers!!!

Now that Valentine’s Day is finally here and you still didn’t get anything for him/her? Unless you want to give them sock bunnies or a song CD from you ex, here are some last minute suggestions

Valentine’s Day Gifts for Him

They say women are hard to understand and please, but in reality, we get pleased with very simple gestures it’s the men who are so confusing when it comes to getting them something. So, I think the best gift you can give him is yourself.

Gift Yourself – Didn’t get it? Men need action and attention. So this Valentine’s Day, listen to his heart and be one with him. Spend a day, only with each other. Gift yourself to him, by surrendering to his wants and demands on this day, that celebrates love! Show him how much you love him, by giving in to his basic instincts. You can also give him some love coupons for further use.

Valentine’s Day Gifts for Her

As I mentioned earlier, we are easy to please. Anything with style and passion will make us happy. You will agree that girls have an obsession for designer handbags. All you can do is to select some latest designer handbag and express your love for her. See, how easy it is :) But now that the time has past to shop and you don’t want to spend so much this month, here is a non-expensive last minute tip-

Me timeGo to any drug store and get her some goodies like chocolates, some knick- knacks and a lovely card and with “Me time” coupons in it.  Give her some time off from kids and home. You can have a few coupons with  “ Cooking day off”, “Babysitting while you go shopping a movie with friends” etc. Here, be creative and think of some of the things your woman appreciates. You can also plan a special girls night out for her with her bffs. Trust me, you do this for her for future and the Valentines day will be all yours ;)

Pinterest – A social network with a difference

It is no news that Facebook and Twitter are the most popular social networking sites. However, there’s a new and hot social network called Pinterest  which is starting to grow quickly just like Facebook did back in 2006.  Now the big question is, “Does Pinterest has the magic to compete with or beat Twitter and Facebook?”

What is Pinterest?

As Pinterest describes itself – “Pinterest is a virtual pinboard. Pinterest allows you to organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web. You can browse pinboards created by other people to discover new things and get inspiration from people who share your interests.”

So basically, it allows its users to organize and share all the beautiful things that you may find in your everyday life.  You can capture or “Pin” a picture from the any site, they can be placed on the boards called “Pinboards” that you have created so others can also see it, use it and share it. As one of the co-founders of Pinterest was a former Facebook employee, the website’s design is such that is bound to attract a lot of people to become members.

Why would you use Pinterest?

If you are searching the web for cool new ways for you to redecorate your kids room, set up a pinboard or if you are a photographer looking for inspiration for your next photo shoot, set up a family/ travel photos pinboard. Basically, you can set up any pinboard based on your interest or hobby. It generates the code for Pinterest community people to share them on their webpage. They can like them, comment on them or share them for free. Along with photos and images, you can also share videos as well. It can be an important tool for people who have or want to start a web-based business. They can promote their ideas through Pinterest.

Pinterest’s goal according to them is “to connect everyone in the world through the ‘things’ they find interesting. We think that a favorite book, toy, or recipe can reveal a common link between two people. With millions of new pins added every week, Pinterest is connecting people all over the world based on shared tastes and interests.”

Pros and Cons of Pinterest

Pros: Interesting way to explore the Web visually based on interests. Lets you save or share images easily. Free.

Cons: It’s an invitation only site. It is difficult to navigate at times. Some areas of interest are not supported with relevant content.

Bottom Line

Pinterest gives Internet users a platform to visually explore, discover and share new ideas.  It’s not entirely a new concept but Pinterest executes the idea fairly well.

Let us know your thoughts on Pinterest.
